NASA ashamed of Jack Parsons?

The infamous occultist rocket scientist, Jack Parsons is in the news.  A recent article in Wired.co.uk  examines the question why NASA seems to have slowly erased  Parsons from their official history.  Parsons’ biographer George Pendle claims that it was difficult finding information on Parsons.  Him and a few of Parsons’ colleagues speculate that NASA has deliberately “written out” Parsons because of his unusual beliefs and various sexual exploits. The article itself makes the same mistakes most writers do when writing about Thelema and even insinuates that Parsons played an active role in the creation of Scientology. The article is what a friend of mine would call the “poke a stick at it” journalistic approach to occultism but is an interesting read nonetheless. Fulgur Press published a collection of Parsons’ poems called “Songs for the Witch Woman”  about his lover, artist Marjorie Cameron, to coincide with the centenary of Jack Parson’s birth this year.

As the Cold War set in, any academics suspected of being communist were frozen out. Parsons and many of his colleagues lost their security clearance, leaving him unemployed. He found himself earning money as a manual labourer, a hospital orderly and a car mechanic. Having been pushed out of science, Parsons became even more deeply entrenched in the occult.
